On 15th June, Appleford is hosting a special country fair to celebrate the 175TH anniversary of the opening of Brunel’s railway line from Didcot to Oxford. Appleford 175 is the village’s contribution to the anniversary celebrations.
Appleford 175 fete is a family event that will appeal to young and old. The steam theme will feature steam trains passing the fair ground (courtesy of GWR) with steam traction engines on the field, along with railway history displays. There will be a beer tent, food stalls for all tastes, with cream teas, curries and barbeques. Children’s rides, bouncy castle, face painting, shows and competitions. For pet lovers there is the Abingdon Dog Training show and an animal sanctuary corner. Listen to the brass band or browse the stalls for bargain toys, books, confectionary, cakes, plants and much else. Exhibition displays of local activity groups and businesses. special interest displays, vintage tractors and cars are in planning. Village sideshows provide traditional events, tombola, raffles, bottle stall, coconuts shy and more.
GWR is supporting all events by running special trains and buses. Event buses will run between Didcot (Railway Centre), Long Wittenham (Pendon Model Railway), Appleford and Culham. The fair is free to all and will run from 12:00 noon on 15th June to early evening on the recreation field in the centre of Appleford. Car parking (modest charge) will be available. The fare ground is alongside the railway line and only short a walk (four mins) from Appleford Station. This will be a very popular event so make sure you don’t miss it!
For rail enthusiasts the day will start with the iconic Flying Scotsman passing through Appleford station around 8:40 am – a treat for budding photographers! During the day there will be events at all five participating stations – Didcot (Rail Centre), Appleford, Culham, Radley and Oxford with “special one-day tickets” available for travel between the stations and events.
In the lead up special competitions, photographic, adults and children’s paintings and artwork on railway themes are being run. Prizes and work will be on display on the day.
